Leica Tri

Of course, you can get a good usable vintage Leica for $ 500 or less. However, it is necessary to understand certain things before choosing one. Leitz made two different systems 35mm rangefinder.
The old system has a mount that accepts lenses that screw into the case the unit (what we call 39mm screw mount or LTM for Leica Thread Mount). This system was introduced in 1930 with the Leica I (C) model, and continued into the 1950s until IIIg Classic Leica. Meanwhile, during the 1950s, Leitz introduced a new system that accepts lenses with a special bayonet mount (instead of screws, the lens is placed cons assembly line with a red dot and one quarter-turn quick closure up).
This is known as the M bayonet system, which began with the excellent Leica M3 and continues until the last M8. Well, for $ 500, you want to find a classic Leica her boyfriend, who knows and probably likes the mystique of the Leica can enjoy their free time.
I spoke to the camera hobby, not the camera for his work, because today, a press photographer was doing its work with the latest digital equipment. No problem. You're on the right track looking at the Leica IIIf. It is a common model, with over 180,000 sold between 1950 and 1957 supports all the millions and millions mount lenses screw Leitz made so far (and also the top mounting screw 39mm Canon, Nikon, and even many lenses made in Russia), and there are always plenty available on eBay.
I do not recommend IIIg Leica, although a camera better picture quality, collectors keep their prices hovering in the range of $ 1000. I do not recommend some previous joint models such as the Leica III, IIIa, IIIc, but are also common and easily accessible for less money, so just large enough to cause many problems and frustrations. Among the models Screw mount, the Leica IIIf is a good option. Find one that works! Do not take a risk on an example that needs any repairs.
Find in one with a little personality outside (as there is no apparent damage, a trademark of friction or a few small bumps are no problem), Seller guarantees that everything works as it should. And Summitry Leitz lens is very fast, but they are very Elmer 5cm f3.5 instead if you can.
Forget the original box (collectors drive the price of the original box, but there is no advantage for you) do not worry about a case (that collapse, and can sometimes cause more damage to the camera, because keeping the humidity), but not looking for a suitable ceiling Leitz lens. This is your best bet for a vintage Leica for use in the range of $ 400 – $ 500.
Now if you want to bend a little, and that you want to explore the M-series rooms later, you can probably find a 1960-ish Leica M2 with a 50mm f2 micron excellent lens somewhere in the order of $ 500 – $ 600. Any thoughts that the same applies for the state, etc. The biggest advantage of the M-series age on the mounting screws series is that if your boyfriend wants time to get a modern Leica (for work and leisure), it already has lenses with the M2 would be interchangeable with the rear chamber.
The M3 is highly desirable among collectors classic The M1 has limited functions and can expect an increase in M4 (actually, should be specifically M4-2 because the M4 series became quite original, though), but the model design is the first "modern". So there you or the Leica IIIf Leica M2, they are your best options in its price range. Regarding your question about the values of Leica in general, yes, everybody the gain.
The vast majority of increases slightly above inflation (in time, not immediately), if not terribly high, but enough money equal to the bank (assuming only be addressed in the best conditions). Models of historical significance, and option some rare models, increased levels much higher in some cases as to be ridiculous. Common models like the IIIf seems just float along with the economy. So, in general, Leica cameras seem a good to excellent "investment.

Where can I sell my used Leica camera in New York?
I have some Leica equipment that I want to sell (M8, M7, M6 TTL, one Noctilux, one Tri Elmar Lens, 2 Viewfinder etc.)
Who buys used Leica equipment in NY? References / Experiences / Beware notes are welcome. Thank you!
When it comes to Leica gear, the options are smaller than they used to be.
First of all, B&H and Adorama will not work for you, as they are too big to have the special attention that is required for Leica.
Of the smaller and “Leica” oriented places, Tamarkin New York (www.tamarkin.com) used to be a powerhouse until they left about a year ago. Ken Hansen was another good option but he too is no longer in business.
Of the remainder, you have Photo Village (www.photovillage.com) – very decent – dealing with Leica equipment. Will is quite knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with.
Kurland Photo (www.kurlandphoto.com) is another dealer of high end brands like Hasselblad, Rollei and Leica. You will get proper answers to your questions about Leica gear. Craig Williams (ex manager of Tamarkin New York) handles the dealings and he is very knowledgeable about Leica – especially M gear.
As per reference and experience;
I wanted to sell some R lenses back in the spring and my friend referred me to a new place that he dealt with before, called Kamerahaus. (www.kamerahaus.com)
Their website looks pretty basic, it looks like an online buying portal. Basically, I sent them a list, they gave me a quote (which was slightly higher than the others at that time), I said OK I want to do it and they mailed me a prepaid UPS shipping label to ship the items to them, which blew me away.
I shipped everything, they got it next day and 4 hours after the UPS delivery, I received a tracking number for my check.
They seem to be operating like Used Camera Buyer (www.usedcamerabuyer.com) but I was satisfied with the speedy service and generous evaluation.
Of course, you always have the option to sell it privately if you can. You will always get more for your gear.
-You can post it on forums (heard stories like people keep you waiting at a Starbucks late night and never show up)
-You can sell it on ebay – not recommended. (may tike time, some buyers buy and don’t pay, a lot of fraudulent people who claim they never received it and get chargeback from paypal, now you’re out of the gear and still have to pay the chargeback. Ebay and Paypal commissions will kill up to %15 of the final price)
Hope this information works for you. Good luck with your sale.
