Selling Paintings Online – 5 Ways to Sell More
Interested in selling paintings online? Below you will find 5 great tips meant to help you sell more paintings by making small changes to the way you do business. 1. Pick a Good Niche
Certain niches in the art community are extremely competitive, but also can be hot sellers are the same time. A niche such as abstract paintings could be s good way to go because of the high demand and large audience, but its also very competitive. In the end its really up to what you want to paint, but do consider the niche of your paintings if you are looking into selling paintings online.
2. Create Bigger Artwork!
its a known fact that the bigger the canvas size the more you can charge in general, due to the higher cost for materials such as the canvas itself, paint and the increase amount of time you will spend painting the larger canvas. So if you are looking for the big bucks consider doing some large paintings and by large I mean bigger then 30 inches by 30 inches.
3. Display Your Work in a variety of Ways
Quality photos of your work can go along way in making a sale. It shows potential buyers you re serious about your craft and you want to make sure the painting is perfect for them. You should take quality photogra[hs of your work and then also showcase your work at actual size as best as possible. Many artists will take a photograph of a room and then Photoshop the painting into the picture of the room to show what it would look like, or take an actual photograph of the painting hanging.
4. Create a Series of Paintings
Walls are big and sometimes one painting just does not cut it for a large wall in a room or office. People often look for multiple paintings of the same style or by the same artist to fill up their walls. Creating a series plays off of this need of multiple paintings and can increase your chances of selling paintings online. People love seeing a series of paintings for sale that all match, and it benefits you because you can charge alot more of a series. Large paintings often come in a set of 3-5 and small paintings often come in a set of 3-9 paintings.
5. Make it Easy to Buy
The key of selling anything is to let people buy your product while they are in the “buying zone”. If some one wants to buy right away, but you don’t make it easy for them to do so then you may miss your only chance to make the sale. If your paintings are showcase on your portfolio site try putting up PayPal Buy Now Buttons under each painting so people can order quickly.

What can a painting express that a photograph cannot?
I’ve seen many remakes of painting from photographs. The paintings tend to be more powerful but, I can never figure out what it is that makes them more powerful. Suggestions please
When a good artist uses a photograph for reference they edit, embellish, interpret and re-arrange the composition to make it more interesting or beautiful.
I painted a covered bridge that was in a low point that got little sun. but by the time I got done it was like I cut down a bunch of trees ( that were out of the picture) to let the sun light up the subject. I was able to punch op the color too. Another thing is that I could take out ugly elements and play up the strengths. The brush work also gave the painting more expressive feel. I added to the depth to an otherwise flat photograph.
