Flash Camera

Review of the Cuddeback No Flash Camera
I took a Cuddeback No Flash out for a test, and used for a few months. This is a product that comes in a little higher in price than other Cuddeback cameras but it has a few features that set it apart from the rest of the Cuddecback lineup.
Things that I liked about the Camera
First of all, the name is a bit of a misnomer. In my opinion they should find another name for this unit. The reason is that is does actually have a flash. Call it the Better Flash or something like that. What I am talking about is that the camera uses a 3.0 megapixel camera during the daytime that takes pretty good pictures. This level of resolution is pretty sufficient, even if you want to blow up the photos or crop them. Not many people do blow up their photos from their field cameras anyway, but if you did it will be possible with most shots from this camera. When the camera takes pictures at night it switches over to a 1.3 megapixel camera that uses an infrared flash. This flash is a great advantage, as it will not scare away the animals that you are trying to capture on the camera. The quality of the pictures that are taken at night are pretty decent, they will be good enough for you to see what you need to. Flash range is thirty feet, which is not bad for most uses. The camera will take both daytime and nighttime video clips, although the quality is just fair. If you are like me, you won’t find much use for video clips anyway; they just take up the memory on the SD card and don’t give much more information.
The trigger time on a trail camera is very important. If you have a trigger time that it too slow you will either get a less-than-ideal angle of the animal or you might have the animal move right out of the picture if it is moving quickly. The trigger speed on this camera is very fast; faster than anything I have used in fact. I would say that it is under a second. No lost pictures due to slow trigger speed with this unit.
Using the camera is fairly easy. The LCD and keypad operation can be learned quickly and are intuitive. There are enough options to give you some versatility; you can change the delays from one minute to sixty minutes, and you can use the Theft stop password protection to keep your camera’s information safe.
Things that I would change about the Camera
This is a big unit. It comes in at over three pounds and the dimensions are pretty large. It is about 10 inches by 7 inches by 3 ½ inches. This doesn’t affect its performance in any way of course, but it could be a little smaller. Some of the security offered by the infrared flash (other hunters in the area won’t see the flash) is offset by the fact that you have this monster hanging from a tree. Other than that it is pretty functional and worth a look.

When is the electrical field of a camera flash the strongest?
Writing a story where I can fudge the science a bit, but I wanted to get this correct. I’m using a camera flash in the story and (without getting into too much detail) need to know when the electrical field around the thing would be the strongest.
The light charges, then expends the energy. It would seem that the field would peak when the charge was expended, but I’m not strong enough in this science to be certain; it might be most powerful when the charge is at its peak, *before* the light goes off.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your attention.
There are two different electric fields involved.
One is the electrical field in the capacitor which stores energy prior to the flash. It is pumped up by a voltage multiplier circuit until it reaches the designed voltage, which is the voltage at which the capacitor stores the amount of energy needed for the flash. It stays at this high level until the flash is triggered.
The other field is that around the conductors. It is highest at the instant of triggering and rapidly declines to near zero as the charge is in the capacitor is dissipated.
If the flash is the type where a primary coil is normally charged and then is collapsed at triggering to generate a current in a secondary coil, then the field is high up until the point at which it is triggered. It is the collapsing field, which is always smaller than the primary field, which generates the current in the flash.
