Currently a new plan is in the works under the Obama administration to push broadband internet access to more rural parts of America. In total right now 20 billion to 30 billion dollars will be spent on improving internet access to areas that do not have high speed internet and improve the over all bandwidth that people who already have access to the internet.
At first glance many people living in rural areas have great hopes for such an effort. Not having access to Cable internet or DSL internet puts many people at a disadvantage. People who live larger cities can easily file taxes online. Look up local weather, news, stocks and correspond easily with family and friends. However in rural areas it is tough to work with dial-up and while things can get done online you have to make an entire afternoon out of it.
All of the money is planned to be given out in the form of tax rebates. Companies that expand coverage to area’s that do not have high speed internet access will get up to a 60% tax rebate and those who increase speeds in area’s that already have high speed internet will get up to a 40% tax rebate.
Nothing is set in stone and chances are even if things get passed today it will not benefit you for years to come. However things are moving forward and further down the line you may be able to benefit from this if you live in a rural area.
So what can I do today to gain high speed internet access if I live in a rural area?
The answer to that is going to be rural high speed satellite internet. Prices over the last few years have gone down by over 50% for many carriers and the speeds have gotten better. Many places offer speeds that are 50 times faster and for around 40 – 79 dollars a month. While this may not seem like a great deal it’s par with the lower end of DSL at 1.5 Mbps and the cost is close if you add in the cost of a phone line.
Satellite internet works just about every were in the US as long as you can see the sky. Most places also offer free installation with a 12 month contract. Keep in mind that almost all will require you to purchase a dish or to rent one from them so those cost’s need to be added in to the over all total. While this option may not be the one you want it is about the only one you have.
You just said “about the only one you have” so what is the other option or options?
There are two other options you may be able to take advantage of. Both may not work for you but they are worth mentioning. The first is something called Line of Site internet. You still need to use a Dish but it will point towards a local tower and you will be able to have high speed internet that way. The cost is normally around 35 – 75 dollars. It can be very hard to find a provider for this type of service. They normally have low advertising budgets so look in the local phone book and ask your neighbors to see if they know anything about such a service in your area.
The lat option for high speed internet in rural areas is going to be wireless broadband. This is through a cell phone company. You use a USB modem that is connects to your computer and that device connects to a local cell phone tower. The speeds are still a good ten times faster then dialup and the cost is around 35- 79 per month. If you have cell phone reception at your place then this may be an option.
