How do you get sky blue in oil painting?
I’m trying to paint the sky in my painting, but everytime i mix my blue that came in the tube with some white, the color turns out to be a greyish color. How do i get a light blue, like the sky? thanks
Try different shades of blue and experiment on something other than your canvas to see how you like the effect.
Some of the common shades are Ultramarine, Cerulean, Phthalo, Colbalt and Cyan. Light Ultramarine will get you closest to a typical sky blue with the least amount of mixing.
I prefer Primary Cyan because it has a deep natural blue and you can tone it down as you please.
But remember, don’t waste a lot of paint unless you’re rich. Mix very small samples at a time and try out these on another surface first.
